| I think it's becoming an annual ritual for me to update my xanga. =\ I
didn't think I still had it (like, it deleted itself or something) and
lo and behold... it's still here. Speaking of still here, I am, which
is a miracle and a half. I completed my first year at UD and like many
(sadly including myself) thought, I fell in love with the school and
I've decided to double major! (here is where the still alive part comes
in). I am a double major in Biology and Drama (wooo!) with a Spanish
concentration. For those of you who don't know or have never heard of
my school, it is the jewel of academia. Our curriculum includes more
reading than that of a Harvard graduate (unless you're a lit major, in
which case I can only hope they read what we read, or how). Along with
the basics, we have what we call "the core" which includes 12 hours (4 semesters) of Philosophy, 12 of Literary Tradition, 6 of Theology, 9 of math and Fine arts, 8 in Science, 3-14 in Modern Language, 6 in American Civilization (lame), 6 in Western Civilization (not enough), Politics and Economics alike.
The Core courses are designed to show you what the best learners of the
past have already discovered, and the fact that everyone is taking the
same courses creates a vibrant intellectual community!! Anyone who knows me should be saying, "Wow Xochitl, this
school sounds like you" and how right you are! I've found my niche. A
private, Catholic, co-educational, residential liberal arts university
with Phi Beta Kappa chapter, 90% of the faculty hold a doctorate or
highest degree in their field, Approximately 80% attend graduate
school; over 85% of pre-med and over
90% of pre-law graduates are accepted by their first-choice
professional school.
Enough
of me ranting about the school, and back to me. hah! Being my typical
self, I had quite a large plate. 19 hours per semester is the max
covered by regular tuition soooooo there are approx. 7 credits pending
outside of my 19/semester. Oh! And obviously I'm adamantly involved in
the theatre (which is fun but goodness the time commitment!) and I have
been working a part-time job since September 2006. Hence the miracle
that I'm still alive...
But here's the thing: God knows the way I am and is a very trusting
transcendent being. He blessed me with a thirst that I have numerous
times felt I had quenched (note the past tense). The stereotypical
motivational speech would tell you that that thirst is never quenched
but I am saying that it is. The blessing does not come from a constant
thirst. You eventually have to feed your dog if you expect it to come
back... and that's exactly what God has done for me. He made me thirst,
he gave me knowledge to quench it, and his blessing to me was not to
leave my mouth dry and constantly seeking, but he made me enjoy this
"drink" and seek it because I wanted it, not because I needed it. We all need God in our lives, but once we figure that out, what's next?
It's a simple distinction between potency and act! (sorry aristotle,
bwuahaha). I have in my nature the potential to thirst... and likewise
the potential to seek out drink. Being a creature of free will, my
instinctual thirst isn't enough to drive me to seek knowledge because
it is also in my free will to suppress it. We all need, but to what
extent? We all love but to what extent? We all want answers but to what
extent do we seek them? We don't have to be like Odin and sacrifice an eye to drink from the
well of knowledge (norse myth) or any other body part... wisdom is a
gift from God and those of us who are privileged enough in this world
should appreciate it. So keep studying you guys!
And just a quick quote from George Weigel, Official Biographer of John Paul II, about the University of Dallas:
"The Best Catholic College in America
Its
advertising bills it as “the Catholic university for independent
thinkers.” But at the University of Dallas, “independent” doesn’t mean
“dissident.” It means “independent of the intellectual fads that have
ruined American higher education." Which is another way of saying that
"independent" means "faithful" — in this case, to the traditions of
learning that are the foundation of Western culture. UD is “the best
Catholic College in America” with “the most demanding and
rewarding…core [curriculum] in the country" X

| So how about I have not updated this in close to a year. Props to me? Well, here is my update:
I have graduated from St. Agnes (at long last). It doesn't even seem like I spent that much time there but I did... ooo I did. I am going to be attending the University of Dallas(VERITATEM, JUSTITIAM, DILIGITE) for two years then God willing I tranfer to Cornell for their anthropology program. that being I don't change my major or stay in Rome. Lot's of things have happened. Right now I am simply awaiting the 14th... now that the 9th no longer holds anything for me. Something has died inside of me, and it shall not be revived for another four years. *sigh*
That being said, my update is complete.
| IT'S MY BIRTHDAY
!~18~!
happy birthday to me...
so whatchu get me, huh huh?
| Interesting night last night....
It started with an art expo at the consulate (an excuse for me to dress up and look nice ) Met some painters, some newscasters and journalists, it was cool. I fell in LOVE with these 2 painting, friggin $800 each though. I was like, "mom... my birthday?" hehe, i wish. This one painter though, love her, she's so cool. I'm her "next project and portrait." I met her last night and she was introducing me to people I didnt know as "the girl who would inspire her new painting" and i think i was tomato red the entire time. How do you respond to that? hahaha. Then the mac grill. Saw people I havent seen in forever, got the hook up of course and made a new friend. "come back anytime, i'll have a table ready for you." How's that for a pick up line? hahaha, after an exchange of words about the steelers, lol.Imagine a girl in semi-professional dress ranting about football. hehe. Love it.
Then I got bored, so I called up aigor. He picked me up, we went to ihop and debated for about, what? 2 hours? Theology, philosophy, life, faith/beliefs, purpose, and God knows what else. I dont know, but all I do know is that I believe in an afterlife Bellinis and cups of coffee later, I was spent. I even talked to my brother on the phone, ate calamari, worked on my play. Yesterday was the PERFECT day. It mingled everything I LOVE into one. It was GORGEOUS.
and tomorrow im going to the first opera of the year with my mom. im excited. This weekend has been blessed. I'm enjoying it because i wont have one like this for a loooooooooooong while.
